Crandall ISD counselors celebrated during National School Counseling Week

Feb. 4, 2020

Crandall ISD is celebrating its school counselors this week, along with thousands of districts across the country, during National School Counseling Week.

Sponsored by the American School Counselor Association (ASCA), the week is designed to focus public attention on the unique contributions of school counselors and how students are better people as a result. National School Counseling Week highlights the tremendous impact school counselors have in helping students achieve school success and plan for their careers.

“This is a special week for some very special people here in Crandall ISD,” said Dr. Wendy Eldredge, CISD superintendent. “The role of school counselors has evolved greatly in the past five years. Comprehensive counseling programs have always been fixtures at Crandall schools, but they have become an even more vital component of the educational process for students as they meet the increasing challenges of today’s society.”

In a proclamation declaring Feb. 3-7 as National School Counseling Week in CISD, Eldredge cited school counselors for being actively engaged in helping students examine their abilities, strengths, interests and talents, and for working in partnership with parents as they encounter the challenges of raising children in today’s world.

“School counselors work with all students and remove barriers to learning by addressing academic concerns, postsecondary options and social-emotional skills,” Eldredge said. “Counseling programs help increase student achievement and provide a much-needed resource for students, parents, teachers and administrators. CISD counselors are integral to student success.”

More than 100,000 school counselors nationwide will be celebrated during the week’s festivities. CISD’s 11 counselors and intervention specialist are:

  • High school: Laurie Blair, Kathy Cox, Billy Edmonds, Donette Jones
  • Middle school: Wendy Adams, Brittany Wilson
  • Elementary school: Christy McCown, Cheryl Parks, Mynda Rivia-Ruiz, Shenise Tett, Vickie Wesley
